Batik Lampung Class For International Students

In this semester Every Thursday Darmasiswa students attend Batik class (one of Outing Class programs). It takes place at Roemah Siger Batik Lampung. They practice to make batik. They learn how to make “Batik Tulis” that consist of some steps as following:

      Step 1: Drawing Pattern.
      – In this process of Batik production, every step is done by handmade to keep the authenticity and
quality of Batik Tulis. Draw the pattern on the fabric using a pencil, make waxing process so much
        easier.

      Step 2: Washing.
      – After the base material is drawn, the next stage is waxing. Batik Tulis is a waxing process using
        canting.

Step 3.1: Dyeing with Synthetic Dyes.
      – Rhemazol is a syntetic that usually use for coloring process with a colet system. This type of dye is
instant because it does not require a mixture of any materials.

Step 3.2: Dyeing with Natural Dyes
      – This Natural color batik require a relatively long time in the process. Began from the manufacture of
dyes, fabric dyeing process until the fixation process also uses natural ingredients.

Step 4: Fixation of Synthetic Colors.
      – Fixation is locking on Batik colors to mantain color when the boiling process occurs wax.

Step 4.2: Fixation on Natural Dyes.
      – For fixation on Batik with natural colors usually use three types of raw materials, called Kapur,
Tunjung, and Tawas. The materials are causing a different color from the base color.

      Step 5: Boil Fabrics.
      – Considering on the stage, the hot water needed to mantain the quality of the fabric, to prevent
damage, Sagu and a little soda abu, dissolved in boiling water. With a mix of these materials, candles
and oil contained in the wax will dissolve in boiling water without damaging the pores of the fabric.

      Step 6: Washing.
      – the last stage making process of Batik Tulis , is washing and dyring. After fabric boiled, the fabric is
washed with clean water so that when drying the cloth in cold conditions.

There are two or more teachers who guide and teach them how make batik effectively. The  position, tools and the others things are influence for making Batik. Artur Piotr Avrial student from Poland, said “this is so hard, we need more patient and concentration to produce our own Batik” and sometimes Artur sing Indonesian song  “Becak”*) to this is one of his way to reveal his feeling that he really enjoy it.
*) Becak is traditional Vehicle from Indonesia.
